Tea, Ingredients, and Safety
What’s in your tea?
Big Heart Tea Co. uses 100% organic herbs in all herbal blends. Our matcha, black, green, and oolong teas are sourced directly from small farms. We only use whole ingredients. No flavors, coloring, or sweeteners added. See each product page for full ingredients and certifications.
Our certified organic herbal teas are made with whole ingredients, not “tea cut,” so they’re extra flavorful.
What’s in your tea leaves?
Just tea. Our matcha, green, oolong, and black teas are single origin and sourced from our direct trade farm partners. Learn more here.
What are your teabags made of?
Our tea sachets are made from 100% compostable, non toxic PLA. No harmful chemicals leech into your tea.
What’s the expiration date for your products?
Non perishable. We recommend up to a 2 year shelf life for best flavor and freshness.
What are the safety guidelines for your tea?
Standard dosage is up to 3 cups a day, brewed in 8 oz of water for 2 minutes. All herbal and spice ingredients meet California’s Prop 65 testing for heavy metals. Our Fake Coffee was third party tested for caffeine and is classified as “Without Caffeine.”
How much caffeine is in tea?
- Herbal teas are naturally caffeine free.
- Green and black teas typically contain 50 to 80 mg per serving. Green tea has natural properties that counteract negative effects of caffeine.
- Matcha has about 60 to 90 mg per 2 g serving and those same counteractive properties.
- Heat extracts more caffeine. Cold brewing methods vary. See our cold brew guide.
Why organic?
To ensure farm workers and families are not exposed to harmful chemicals and to protect soil health and water quality. Herbal and spice ingredients are tested for heavy metals.
What does “direct trade” mean?
One or two degree connection to the farmer. We work with small, pesticide free, biodiverse farms. See our partner list here.
How are your tea bags plastic free? What is “PLA”?
How do I compost PLA?
PLA is 100% compostable by municipal composters. If that is not available, you can discard knowing it is biodegradable and non toxic.
Safety of Our Tea Bags
1. What are Big Heart Tea Co.’s tea bags made from?
Our tea bags are made from Neo Soilon, a biodegradable mesh material derived from non GMO sugarcane PLA (polylactic acid). Unlike traditional plastic based tea bags, our material is compostable and free from petroleum based plastics.
2. Do Big Heart Tea Co. tea bags release microplastics into my tea?
No. A 2021 study published on PubMed analyzed different types of tea bags, including nylon, mixed paper with polypropylene, and biodegradable PLA based bags. The study found that nylon and polypropylene based tea bags released significant microplastics into the tea, while the PLA based biodegradable tea bag showed no detectable plastic residue in the brewed tea. 📖 Read the study: PubMed Study on Microplastic Release.
3. Is PLA a plastic?
PLA is classified as a bioplastic. It is made from plants such as corn or sugarcane rather than petroleum. While it is a polymer, PLA is different from conventional plastics because it is biodegradable in industrial composting conditions. Under the right conditions it breaks down into natural compounds like lactic acid and CO₂.
4. What happens when PLA tea bags break down?
PLA does not create persistent microplastics. If small PLA fragments form, they break down through hydrolysis in the presence of water, becoming small biodegradable molecules such as lactic acid that microbes can consume. 📖 Read more: Report on PLA Breakdown.
5. Have Big Heart Tea Co. tea bags been tested for plastic shedding?
Yes. PLA tea bags have been lab tested by industry experts to confirm that they do not shed plastic chemicals into brewed tea. Nylon or PET tea bags can release large numbers of microplastic particles when exposed to hot water. PLA tea bags remain intact and do not leach synthetic plastic particles. 📖 Read more: PLA Safety Report.
6. Do PLA tea bags contain harmful chemicals like BPA or phthalates?
No. PLA is naturally free of BPA, phthalates, and heavy metal catalysts that are common concerns in petroleum based plastics. Independent testing found that our tea bag material did not leach BPA or phthalates at sensitive detection limits. Because PLA is derived from plant starches, it does not contain residues associated with petroleum based plastic manufacturing. 📖 Read more: Plastic-Free Tea Materials Overview.
7. Can I compost your tea bags?
Yes. Our PLA tea bags are compostable in industrial composting facilities where heat and humidity help them break down into CO₂, water, and biomass. If you do not have access to industrial composting, place them in your compost bin and allow additional time for decomposition.
8. How do your tea bags compare to traditional tea bag materials?
| Material | Source | Compostable | Microplastic Risk in Hot Water |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nylon / PET mesh | Petroleum | No | High in studies |
| Paper with polypropylene heat seal | Paper plus petroleum binder | Typically no | Medium in studies |
| PLA mesh (Neo Soilon) | Plant based (sugarcane) | Yes in industrial facilities | Not detected in cited PLA tests |

9. Are Big Heart Tea Co. tea bags safe?
Yes. Based on manufacturer documentation, scientific research, and independent testing, there is no evidence that our tea bags release toxins when steeped in hot water. Our PLA based tea bags are food safe and biodegradable. They do not contribute to persistent microplastic pollution.

Plastic-Free Tea Bags
So here we are. . .

Our herbs and spices are 100% organic and our tea is sourced direct from small farms in Malawi, Japan, India and USA.

Our bags are made from a biodegradable woven mesh called Soilon. Soilon is derived from corn starch and can be composted completely. Soilon is a safe, non-toxic, environment-friendly material — perfect for filtering tea and herbal infusions.

Q&A
How is Soilon made?
Soilon is made of poly lactic acid (PLA) polymer resin, made by lactic fermentation of glucose (derived from corn starch) by an enzyme and polymerization.
PLA, sounds like plastic. . .
Unlike traditional petroleum-based plastics, PLA is a plastic substitute made from fermented plant starch, ours is made from non-GMO sugarcane.
How does Soilon decompose?
Soilon can be decomposed rapidly when it is put into heated composting system, and quite slowly when it is used in usual circumstances (so don’t litter, obvs). The degradation is initiated by temperature, moisture, and alkaline material, and can be completely, safely degraded by microorganisms.
How long does decomposition take?
According to this article in the Scientific American, PLA can break down into its constituent parts (carbon dioxide and water) within 3 months in a “controlled composting environment” (an industrial composting facility, heated to 140°F and surrounded by plenty of digestive microbes). It will take far longer in a home compost bin, and hopefully won’t end up in a landfill packed so tightly that no light and little oxygen are available to assist in the process. Any organic matter in landfills is a huge waste, y’all, and releases methane. Indeed, analysts estimate that a PLA could take anywhere from 100 to 1,000 years to decompose in a landfill.
So, are your tea bags safe?
Our tea bags are 100% safe. They contain no hazardous substances to leech into your tea, such as endocrine disruptors (environmental hormones), and are naturally anti-fungal and antibacterial.
