You may not know this, but Big Heart Tea Co. actually came about just as founder Lisa was coming out of ashram life.
Tea became one of the key manifestations of her goal to integrate the hatha / kundalini into her life.
💡 Here’s a fun fact: Big Heart Tea Co.’s original line of 7 teas was organized and inspired by the chakra system. Royal Treatmint is the tea that we aligned to the throat chakra. Made with not one but two types of mint, it helps clear the throat and airways, soothing your throat so you can speak your truth without blockages.

Don’t Know Much About the Chakras?
Not familiar with the chakra system? Don’t worry — That’s what this series of blog posts will explore by unpacking each chakra, one by one. We’ve also put together this nifty little primer on the chakras for you:

But here’s the nutshell version: Chakras are a series of energy systems throughout your body. Moving beyond just your body, this system can be used as an organizational tool to help you live a more integrated and connected life with yourself, others, and your surroundings.
Think of the chakra system as a ladder. It walks you through the basic feelings and senses that we have as humans. You can apply this to any creative process or any process in life. It is a model to connect within our human experience.
Circling back to tea, Big Heart Tea Co.’s chakra inspiration isn’t just about delivering yummy stuff in appealing packaging (though yes, that mattered too) — the herbs and message behind each tea are aligned with bringing a specific chakra into balance.
In this series of blog posts, we’ll dig deep into each of the chakras, including exploring its meaning and how to keep yours in balance with suggested practices, mantras, and yes — the perfect tea.
The Throat Chakra
The throat chakra is your center of communication. It’s all about speaking and living your truth and expressing yourself.
In this post, we’ll go through all the important stuff: What is the throat chakra? How does it work? How can you keep the throat chakra balanced? And more. That’s a lot, so let’s get moving!
At-a-Glance: Throat Chakra Basics + Associations
Here’s what you need to know about the throat chakra.
What it is: The center of communication
Sanskrit Name for the throat chakra: Vishuddha, which means “pure.”
Where it is: As the name implies, the throat chakra is in the center of the neck.
Associations:
- The throat chakra is associated with the element of ether or space. It’s in this spacious, expansive place that your true self can exist.
- The throat chakra is associated with the color blue
- The throat chakra is associated with the sound ham (rhymes with “mom”).
- The throat chakra is closely associated with the thyroid gland, which regulates your metabolic rate and other key functions in the body.
- The throat chakra is associated with the yogic path of mantra, or speaking prayer.
Best tea for the root chakra: Big Heart Tea Co.’s Royal Treatmint. Mint both invigorates and soothes, making it perfect for clearing out stuck energy and improving your ability to communicate.
What is the Throat Chakra All About?
The fifth chakra, located in the center of the throat, is right along the highway between your heart and your head. It’s a gateway for energy between the lower and higher chakras, and manifests as a center of communication, wisdom, and knowing.
While it’s centered in the throat, the chakra’s energy extends to the throat, ears, and nasal passages — so in terms of communication, it’s not just about what you’re speaking but what you’re hearing. Can you listen to what people tell you and digest and integrate? Or are you passively listening and engaging while making up your own experience in your mind?
The Importance of Keeping the Throat Chakra Balanced
Here are some signs that your throat chakra is functioning just fine:
- Clear communication: You express yourself clearly and confidently, even in challenging circumstances.
- Authenticity: You’re able to express your true self honestly. You don’t hide who you are.
- Creative flow: Expression and communication go hand in hand. A balanced throat chakra lets inspiration flow freely.
- Confident: You are comfortable and empowered.
- Your metabolism is healthy and not sluggish.
On the flip side, if your throat chakra is in a state of imbalance, you might feel:
- Difficulty communicating: It’s hard to say what you mean or express yourself. “That didn’t come out right” is a common refrain.
- Uninspired: You don’t feel comfortable or don’t feel like you have access to expressing yourself creatively.
- Inauthentic: You are not able to authentically connect with others, which can leave you feeling isolated.
- You feel like you’re living a lie: You can’t express who you really are for fear of being judged or other consequences. This can manifest as anxiety, self-doubt.
- Physically, you may experience frequent sore throats, thyroid issues, jaw clenching, neck pain, or headaches.
Don’t worry — most people feel some sort of an imbalance at some time or another. Happily, if your throat chakra is feeling out of whack, there are some tried-and-true ways to bring it back into a happy place.
How to Balance Your Throat Chakra
Here are some basic practices that can help get you back in balance:
- Express yourself (and your truth). Be unabashedly yourself in your favorite form of expression — Singing, dancing, writing/journaling, or creating art can be good ones.
Want a more specific prescription? Here’s a little ritual we came up with to soothe the throat chakra:
Throat Chakra Ritual
Step 1: Brew up some Royal Treatmint. Be present in every part of its preparation: Choose a nice (ideally blue!) cup. Find a place that you love to drink it. Sing to yourself while the water boils and the tea steeps.
Step 2: Stretch your neck, baby! Head rolls, neck stretches, and intentional breathing can all help open up the space around your throat chakra, giving you more space to express yourself.
Step 3: Give yourself space and permission to let your inner voice shine with these mantras:
- I am heard.
- I live and speak my truth.
Why We Coordinated Royal Treatmint with the Throat Chakra
All tea is great for the throat chakra, but Royal Treatmint — a melange of
organic spearmint, organic peppermint, organic lavender, organic tulsi, and organic ginkgo — is a cut above. Here’s why:
- Peppermint has antimicrobial and antiviral properties that can help stave off sore throats — or shorten the time you’re in discomfort if you already have a sore throat.
- Peppermint contains menthol, which is a natural decongestant. Clear those airways!
- Mint can help relax your muscles, so drinking tea is like a mini massage for your throat!
- Lavender has long been hailed for its calming qualities. When you inhale it, it can help reduce headaches and nervous disorders — giving you plenty of space to heal and be your authentic self.
- Gingko keeps your memory sharp, which makes you a better listener — both to your inner compass and when engaging with others.
Do yourself (and your throat chakra) a solid — pick up some Royal Treatmint today.

Important note from BHT founder Lisa Govro:
In offering our Chakra set, I feel it is important to acknowledging my own cultural background. As a white, cis-gendered woman of European descent teaching about the chakra system and tea, I must recognize that my cultural background might influence how I approach and present this knowledge.
