Third Eye Chakra

Third Eye Chakra

Hey. You’ve heard the term “spidey sense,” right? That’s what the third eye chakra is all about — intuition and trusting your inner guidance.

If you occasionally feel like your inner compass could use a little tune up, this blog post is for you. Today, we’ll talk all about the third eye chakra — including why Big Heart Tea Co.’s Minty Blue is the perfect tea to keep it balanced. But first, a little backstory on why we’re here…

Big Heart Tea Co. + Chakras = A Long and Storied Relationship

We’re proud to announce a brand-new product: Big Heart Tea Co.’s Chakra Tea Boxed Set. This is a product near and dear to our hearts, and it’s been a long time coming!

You may not know this, but Big Heart Tea Co. actually came about just as founder Lisa was coming out of ashram life.

Tea became one of the key manifestations of her goal to integrate the hatha / kundalini into her life.

💡 Here’s a fun fact: Big Heart Tea Co.’s original line of 7 teas was organized and inspired by the chakra system. Minty Blue is the tea that we aligned to the third eye. Not only does the mystical (yet all-natural) blue hue align with the color of this energy center, but its minty composition offers a cleansing, refreshing reset for the senses. (We’ll get to why — and how to channel more chakra-boosting magic — in a little bit.)

Don’t Know Much About the Chakras?

Not familiar with the chakra system? Don’t worry — That’s what this series of blog posts will explore by unpacking each chakra, one by one. We’ve also put together this nifty little primer on the chakras for you:

Check out our Chakra Basics post here

But here’s the nutshell version: Chakras are a series of energy systems throughout your body. Moving beyond just your body, this system can be used as an organizational tool to help you live a more integrated and connected life with yourself, others, and your surroundings.

Think of the chakra system as a ladder. It walks you through the basic feelings and senses that we have as humans. You can apply this to any creative process or any process in life. It is a model to connect within our human experience.

Circling back to tea, Big Heart Tea Co.’s chakra inspiration isn’t just about delivering yummy stuff in appealing packaging (though yes, that mattered too) — the herbs and message behind each tea are aligned with bringing a specific chakra into balance.

In this series of blog posts, we’ll dig deep into each of the chakras, including exploring its meaning and how to keep yours in balance with suggested practices, mantras, and yes — the perfect tea.

Third Eye Chakra

The Third Eye Chakra

As our founder Lisa puts it, the third eye chakra is your “alien power center.” It’s about seeing beyond, intuition, and gut feelings. If you’re the visualizing sort, think of it as a glowing beam of light coming from the space between and just above your eyes. That beam contains a wealth of superhero powers related to your dreams, intuition, and untapped unconscious knowledge. Cool, huh?

In this post, we’ll go through all the important stuff: What is the third eye chakra? How does it work? How can you keep the third eye chakra balanced? And more. That’s a lot, so let’s get moving!

At-a-Glance: Third Eye Chakra Basics + Associations

Here’s what you need to know about the third eye chakra.

What it is: The third eye is your center of intuition.

Sanskrit Name for the third eye chakra: Ajna, which means “foremost” in Sanskrit, referring to its prominence as the center of consciousness and perception.

Where it is: The third eye chakra is right in the region of your eyes and forehead. Some say the bigger your forehead, the bigger your third eye!

Associations:

  • The third eye chakra is associated with the element of light, which illuminates and lets us see.
  • The third eye chakra is associated with the color navy blue or deep indigo
  • The third eye chakra is associated with the sound om or aum.
  • It’s also associated with the yantra, a geometric visual that, among other things, can be used as a meditation aid.

Best tea for the third eye chakra: Big Heart Tea Co.’s Minty Blue. In addition to matching the color associated with the third eye energy center, the refreshing flavor of this tea, made with butterfly pea, mint, and tulsi, helps bathe the senses.

Let’s go into more detail below.

More About the Third Eye Chakra

As previously noted, the third eye is all about your spidey sense. Common qualities associated with the third eye chakra include concentration, intuition, and perception.

The Importance of Keeping the Third Eye Chakra Balanced

When you have a balanced third eye chakra, you’re in tune with your intuition. You’re connected to your imagination but still rooted in reality. You feel mentally strong.

Here are some signs that your third eye chakra is functioning just fine:

  • You trust your gut feelings
  • You’re open-minded
  • You feel mentally strong
  • You trust others
  • You embrace the truth
  • You have inner wisdom

However, if your third eye chakra is imbalanced, you may feel:

  • A lack of connection with intuition — you don’t trust yourself
  • Delusional
  • Paranoid
  • Indecisive
  • Anxious
  • Close-minded / you may hold on to limiting beliefs
  • You may suffer with depression

Don’t worry — most people feel some sort of an imbalance at some time or another. Happily, if your third eye chakra is feeling out of whack, there are some tried-and-true ways to bring it back into a happy place.

How to Balance Your Third Eye Chakra

Here are some basic practices that can help get you back in balance:

    • Slow down. If you’re constantly in a rushed, frazzled state, you’ll have trouble listening to your inner guidance. Try to slow down — taking a pause and enjoying a cup of tea is a good start!
  • Wear the color blue.
    • Meditate. There’s no better way to get in touch with yourself.
    • Practice mindfulness. Related to the “slow down” advice above, try doing everything you do with a little more presence — even mundane stuff like washing dishes or brushing your teeth. Try taking a walk without looking at your phone the whole time.

Want a more specific prescription? Here’s a little ritual we came up with to soothe the sacral chakra:

    Third Eye Chakra Ritual

Step 1: Brew up some Minty Blue. Try to be mindful and present in every part of the process. Carefully choose a vessel. Choose a peaceful place to sit and enjoy it. Don’t stimulate yourself in any way while drinking — no TV, no phone, no book. Simply be present.

Step 2: Meditate. There are many different ways to meditate — but most of them involve planting yourself in a peaceful place with minimal distractions. Even if it’s just for five minutes, sit in stillness.

Step 3: Try some mindful yoga. Here are two techniques to try:

Child’s pose is a yoga-class favorite: A restorative pose where you kneel on the floor with knees either together or wide, then place your third eye on the ground.

If this pose is not accessible to you, try sitting comfortably and gently massaging your third eye, or alternatively, try eye yoga (yep, it’s a thing). It’s a means of getting mindful by moving your eyes by looking far away, scanning from side to side, etc.

Another method to try? Candle gazing can get you in a meditative mindset by focusing your gaze on a single object.

Step 3: Nurture your third eye with these mantras:

    I trust my intuition.

I am imaginative, insightful, and intuitive.

    I release doubt.
    I trust myself.

Why We Coordinated Minty Blue with the Third Eye Chakra

As noted earlier, the color associated with the third eye chakra is a deep, dark blue — precisely the hue of our Minty Blue tea.

But moving past aesthetics, there’s plenty about this tea that can help stimulate and revive your spidey sense energy.

For example, the key ingredient — mint — has been proven to have a positive impact on brain function. It can improve your alertness and memory, and energize you.

Butterfly pea has been used to boost memory in Ayurvedic medicine for years and years. But in more modern society, studies have shown that it displays nootropic activity — a fancy way of saying that it can help enhance your cognitive performance.

Finally, tulsi is a healing powerhouse across the board (learn more in this post). But in terms of third eye energy, it may help reduce brain fog. Studies have shown that regular consumption of tulsi can help improve cognitive function — especially in older adults.

When all of these three powerhouse ingredients come together in flavorful harmony, you get an energizing, refreshing brew that helps give you an inner “cleanse” and fills you with a renewed sense of purpose and energy.

Plus, the very act of brewing tea and drinking it acts as a mini cleanse for your mind, a palate cleanser between everything else you have to do during the day.

Don’t delay — pick up some Minty Blue today!

Important note from BHT founder Lisa Govro:

In offering our Chakra set, I feel it is important to acknowledging my own cultural background. As a white, cis-gendered woman of European descent teaching about the chakra system and tea, I must recognize that my cultural background might influence how I approach and present this knowledge.
